For fans of the 4 teams taking part in the college football playoffs, the last few weeks have probably gone by in rather excruciatingly slow fashion. The only real bright spot is that there have been plenty of great bowl games to keep everyone occupied, but it’s fair to suggest that the excitement level is now really starting rise, especially with only a few short days between now and the start of the playoffs. The race to become the National Champion in college football will officially kick-off at the Rose Bowl, which is set for 5 PM on the first day of the New Year. Baker Mayfield has turned his final year of college ball into a Heisman trophy winning affair, and he will be looking to lead his Oklahoma Sooners to a national title, to add to that. The first step in that journey will be a game against the Georgia Bulldogs, which is not what anyone would consider to be an easy step. The Bulldogs come into the Rose Bowl holding favorable betting odds, with the point total set at 60.

Why bet on the Georgia Bulldogs

The Georgia Bulldogs have had a wonderful year in just their second season under coach Kirby Smart, and with the #1 recruiting class for 2018, this is a program that looks as though it is going to be very good for years to come. This team will be focusing on the current crop of players, though, as it has been the commitment of the seniors on this squad that may have made all the difference. A handful of great players decided to return for their final year of eligibility, and the Dawgs have not looked back since. They have one of the best defenses in the country, surrendering 13 PPG this season, but they are also in possession of the best one-two RB tandem in the nation with Sony Michel and Nick Chubb both posting big numbers. If they have one potential weakness, it is having a rookie QB in Jake Fromm at the helm, but he has looked better with each passing week. The Bulldogs have gone 9-3 SU in their last 12 games in January, and during this regular season, they went 9-4 ATS and 5-7 O/U.

Why bet on the Oklahoma Sooners

Baker Mayfield has been the king of the highlight reel this season, although not always for all the right reasons. This is a supremely talented young man who helped his team get to 12 wins and just shy of 45 PPG on offense, but he has also had a few childish moments that have called his character into play a little. He can wipe away all the bad by stepping up and helping his team win a National Championship, but he is also going to need some help from his defense, which is something that is certainly not guaranteed. The Sooners D ranked 81st in the nation this season, but their bend doesn’t break style meant that they held opponents to just 25 PPG. They will need to be at their best to stop the Georgia run game because things could get ugly if they don’t. The Sooners were 8-5 ATS and 6-6-1 O/U in the regular season.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

The bookies have this one close for a reason, and that is because these two teams are so evenly matched. At the end of the day, though, my concern is the potential inability of the Sooners to stop the run. If Chubb or Michel gets over 100 yards, the Dawgs win and the point total goes OVER, which is exactly what I believe will happen.

Predicted Score: Georgia Bulldogs 33 Oklahoma Sooners 30
