The weather outside may still be frightful in some parts of the country, but you can bet that the sun will be shining in Arizona this weekend during the PGA Waste Management Phoenix Open. A field of 132 players will be descending on the TPC Scottsdale Course, with Hideki Matsuyama looking for the three-peat at this event. He completed the double last year with a playoff win over Webb Simpson, and if he can pull out another victory at this event, it will be the first three-peat on the PGA Tour since 2011. Winning this one is not going to be easy, though, as some of the best players in the world will be arriving in Arizona to soak up the sun while they work towards a share of the $6.9 million in prize money that is being offered up. Can Matsuyama do it again, or will he be toppled by one of the other great players at this event? Let’s take a look at some of the favorites.

Spieth burst onto the PGA Tour in a big way back in 2015, winning majors and ending the year with 5 tour victories. While he has cooled off a little since then, he is still arguably the best player in the world right now, currently sitting #3 in the world rankings. He has played sparingly this season but does have one top 10 finish to his name. With the first of the majors right around the corner, we will be looking for Spieth to get into a groove in the next few tournaments he takes part in.
As we mentioned earlier, this is an event that Matsuyama really seems to enjoy, especially given that he has won it in each of the last two years. The Japanese star came into the 2018 season with very high expectations, as his 3 wins on the tour last year was a career best. He has started the 2018 season in very good form, landing in the top 5 in two different tournaments. I’m not one to play the chalk in the PGA, but I think Matsuyama can pull off the three-peat here.
Prior to the midway point of the 2017 season, no-one but the fiercest of golf fans had probably heard of Jon Rahm. The Spaniard quickly became a household name, though, as he went on a tear at the end of the season that hoisted him all the way up to the #2 spot in the world. He has started the 2018 season as he finished last year and already has a tour win under his belt in the early going. He is a solid top 5 pick in my opinion.
As you can see from the betting odds favorites for the PGA Waste Management Phoenix Open, we have a very strong group of players going after the prize. Fowler is another top 10 PGA pro, currently sitting at #7 in the world. He has also made a solid start to the season, landing a pair of top 5 finishes in the early going. I’m not so sure that he will be at the top of the leader-board when this tournament is over, but I think he is a solid top 5 pick.
