With each team still having roughly 50 games to play in the regular season, you hate to suggest that a series played this week would be of the must-win variety. The reality here, though, is that while 50 games may seem like a lot, it isn’t really when you are more than 5 games off the pace in any given playoff race. Every loss cuts a little deeper at this stage of the season while sending the team in question a little closer to the brink of playoff extinction. Starting on Tuesday with a double-header. The Atlanta Brave and Washington Nationals will play a 4-game MLB series that could spell the end of the road for one of them. The Braves are suddenly hot again while the Nationals continue to huff and puff without making up any ground in the divisional race. It is more than fair to suggest that a win for the Braves in this series could be the beginning of the end for the Nationals and their current line-up as we know it.

MLB SeriesThe Braves have been one of the pleasant surprises of the season, with all those moves for young prospects starting to bear some fruit. This is a younger team, so it wasn’t really a surprise that they started to falter a little as the first half of the season came to a close. There were some concerns that it might be a sign that the Braves were going to come back to the pack, but they have rebounded nicely, coming into this week having won 6 of their last 7 games. The unfortunate thing for Atlanta is that Philly are getting hot at the same time, which means the Braves are still a game and a half back in the East, although they are still holding the final Wild Card spot, albeit by the slenderest of margins. The Braves are 7-5 versus Washington, but just 2-3 in games played in the nation’s capital.

MLB Series
Atlanta Braves Vs Washington Nationals 4The Nationals were expected to run away with this division, but now find themselves 6 games off the pace and 4 ½ games out in the Wild Card. The road to the playoffs looks to be a tricky one for the Nationals, and this series could prove to be a do or die type scenario for them. If we look on the bright side, the Nats have been playing well of late, going 7-3 in their last 10 games. Unfortunately, though, their positive run has come at a time when the teams ahead of them are also playing good ball. You simply cannot make up any ground in that type of scenario. The games that the Nationals have played against the Braves at home this season have all been close, with the average margin of victory in those 5 games being less than 1 RPG.

MLB Series
Atlanta Braves Vs Washington Nationals 5Given how well these two teams are playing right now, we could potentially be looking at them canceling one another out. I hate to sit on the fence, but a split in these 4 games really does look like the most likely outcome here.
