While we have certainly seen some surprises through the first half of the MLB season, it is fair to suggest that most of them have come in the National League. The American League is essentially playing out just as we expected, with the perceived preseason favorites all rising to the top through the first half of the season. There is still a lot of baseballs to be played, though, and all the division leaders will be well aware that the leads they have now are not guaranteed to be there when all is said and done. One team that looks to be humming right along are the Houston Astros, as they have shown no sign of any type of World Series hangover. While other teams in the division have played a game of rising and fall, the Astros have played consistently good baseball from start to finish. They will head into the weekend with a road series against the LA Angels, a division rival who are sinking further and further as the season progresses. Why bet on the Houston Astros

As we mentioned at the start of this piece, the Astros have played consistently well through the first half of the season, proving that their World Series win last year was no fluke. This is a team that appears to have no obvious flaws. They have already hammered home 500 runs this season, good enough for second in the league, and they are also first in all the major pitching categories that the MLB has to offer. They are one of only two teams, the Boston Red Sox being the other, to have won at least 30 games home and away, so where they play really doesn’t seem to matter. They are 3-3 in previous meetings with the LA Angels this season, and went 2-1 in their last visit to Anaheim, with all three of those games being of the low scoring variety (2.7 RPG versus 1.7 RPG).

Why bet on the Los Angeles Angels

The problem with the Angels is that they are somewhat middle of the pack in everything they do. Their hitting and pitching are not what you would consider being particularly bad, but it is certainly not good enough to have them in as a challenger. It is once again Mike Trout who is leading the way for this team, but there are just not enough players doing what is needed to elevate the Angels to a playoff position. They are already 14 games off the pace being set by the Astros, but perhaps more importantly, they are also 9 games back of the Mariners for second in the division, which makes even a Wild Card spot seem highly unlikely. The Angels have played the Astros tough this season, but they will need to be at their best to get anything here.

Expert Pick and Series Prediction

I expect to see the Astros start to turn up the heat even higher in the second half as they look to put this division to bed as quickly as possible. If this series is anything like the last one in Anaheim, then look for the Astros to win it via a bunch of low scoring games.
