This has been one of the more surprising MLB seasons in recent memory, as we have seen a few times rise from relative obscurity into playoff contention. The success of the Houston Astros last season has prompted a few teams to follow a similar pattern of doing business, which is to play the long game of loading up on prospects as opposed to throwing out a lot of money, a technique that doesn’t tend to work; just ask the LA Dodgers. The division that has benefitted most from this way of building a team in the NL East, as both the Atlanta Braves and the Philadelphia Phillies are beginning to reap the benefits of developing great prospects over the last couple of seasons. It looks as though it is coming down to a battle between those two teams for the East, but the Nationals are going to feel as though they still have a say in the outcome. While Washington looks to be a longshot at best to be in the playoffs, they can still alter the shape of the division. This 3-game MLB Series will be the first of 9 games they will play against Philly over the next few weeks.

MLB SeriesIt was a disappointing end to the week for the Phillies, as they ended up splitting a 4-game MLB Series with the New York Mets. The fact that they split after winning the first two games hurt, but what was perhaps more damaging was that the 2 losses at the end of the series came at the same time as the Braves being swept by the Colorado Rockies. The Phillies were able to close the gap at the top but still, find themselves a game back of the division-leading Braves. Philly are now on the road for the next 6 games, which could present a problem given that they are 7 games under .500 away from home this season. While they are 6-4 versus the Nationals in all games this year, they are just 3-3 on the road against their division rivals, which is all the more frustrating when you consider that they outscored Washington by an average of over a run per game in those 6 outings.

MLB Series

MLB SeriesThis is a team that was widely picked to win the NL East in a bit of a canter, but the reality now is that this group is likely to be blown up at the end of the season, with Max Scherzer the only player who would appear to be totally safe. It has been a disastrous year for the Nationals, and it certainly looks as though they have given up on the season, as they are now just 3-7 in their last 10 games. We can talk about them potentially playing the role of spoiler and having a hand in how things play out in the East coming down the stretch, but you have to question if they have any interest in doing that. The Phillies are not a high-scoring team, but consider that the Marlins, one of the worst teams in the league, just ran up 19 runs in their last 2 games with the Nationals.

Philadelphia Phillies Vs Washington Nationals 5

MLB SeriesIt would be easy to take the Phillies in the sweep here, but they will need to face Max Scherzer in the final game of this MLB Series, With that in mind, let’s take Philly to win 2 of 3.
