We are heading into the penultimate weekend of the 2018 MLB regular season and there are still some things to be decided before we know who faces who in the playoffs. The American League is all but set, while there is still some serious jockeying for position in the National League. There are some big MLB Series on tap for the coming weekend and we are going to take a look at 4 of them. While most of the series we have chosen have playoff implications, one of them may actually be a preview of a playoff series. Let’s get right to the action, with some predictions thrown in for good measure.

Boston Red Sox at Cleveland Indians

Both of these teams punched their playoff tickets a while back, so there is nothing to really play for in this series other than a psychological edge. There is a very good chance that these two could be going head to head at some point in the postseason, so winning this series would give one of these teams a bit of a leg up. When they met in Boston earlier this season, that 4-game series ended in a split, proving that there is little to set these two apart. The Red Sox are going to finish the season with the best record in baseball and I think they will want to rack up as many wins as possible. I like them to take 2 of 3 here.

MLB Series

Philadelphia Phillies at Atlanta Braves

The Atlanta Braves are so close to the playoffs they can taste it, and they can book their ticket with a series win over the Philadelphia Phillies this weekend. As it stands now, the Braves have a 5 ½ game lead on the Phillies in the NL East and it would really take a sweep by the visitors to make the final week of the season interesting. As good a season as this has been for Philadelphia, it is their road play that has killed them. They are 11 games under .500 away from home and I think they will struggle again here, losing 2 of 3 to the Braves.

MLB Series

Milwaukee Brewers at Pittsburgh Pirates

The Milwaukee Brewers are in a very good spot in the NL Wild Card, but they also know that they cannot afford to relax until they have finally clinched their spot. They still have an outside shot at running down the Cubs in the NL Central, but realistically, the final few days of the season are all about locking up home field in the Wild Card Game. This trip to Pittsburgh is a bit of a tricky one, as the Brewers have struggled against the Pirates this season, winning just 1 of 7 games played in the Steel City. Making matters worse is that fact that the Pirates are hot right now, winning 5 in a row. That said, I don’t see Milwaukee passing up an opportunity to improve their playoff lot, so let’s take the Brewers to win 2 of 3.

MLB Series

Colorado Rockies at Arizona Diamondbacks

Both of these teams made it to the postseason last year, but as it stands right now, both would be out. The Diamondbacks slide began a little while back, and they are almost certainly out of contention. The Rockies are still alive, but they need to break out of their current 3-game slump if they are to make up the 1 ½ game deficit in the Wild Card race. These two have split things right down the middle this season, going 8-8 in their previous 16 meetings. I give the slight edge to the Rockies here and like them to take 2 of 3.
