Prior to the start of every season, we all make predictions on which teams will win their respective divisions, as well as considering who might be in the Wild Card picture. There are a few divisions that we tend to look at as no-brainers, but as is always the case in professional sports, there is a reason why they actually play the games. Things seldom work out the way we imagined them, and that is certainly true in the National League East. The vast majority of folks making their season predictions had the Washington Nationals winning that one in rather comfortable fashion, yet as we come into the homestretch of the MLB season, they are in 3rd and well off the pace. Their next game will be against a Chicago Cubs team who are leading their division as expected, but who are perhaps not as dominant as we thought they might have been. Both teams need this MLB series for very different reasons, which should make this 3-game weekend set a fun one to watch and wager on.

MLB SeriesOther than Max Scherzer, there really isn’t anyone on this team who can hold their head high at this stage of the season. Yes, Bryce Harper is hitting the ball out of the park and driving in runs as usual, but he is also just .234 on the season and a constant source of distraction. The nationals have continually found a way to underwhelm and frequently run into teams who just want to win more than they do. That is what is happening with the Nats current series with the Braves, where Atlanta have taken 2 of 3 on the road. Prior to the final game of that series, Washington are 6 back of the Phillies for the division lead and are not faring much better in the Wild Card race. This will be their first meeting with the Cubs this season, with the 12 games between them last year being evenly split.

MLB Series

MLB SeriesWhile not setting a blistering pace in the National League, the Cubs are doing more than enough to maintain the division lead in the Central, where they are a game and a half up on the Milwaukee Brewers. Chicago blew an opportunity to better that lead after getting blown out by the Royals 9-0 in the final game of that series, which the Cubs took 2-1. That series win took the Cubs to 6-4 in their last 10 games, which is essentially the mark that they have been hitting all season long. If they can continue to win at that rate in the coming weeks, there is a better than average chance that they will be in the postseason again. Home field has certainly been kind to the Cubs, as they are a solid 35-21 in their own ballpark.

MLB Series

MLB SeriesIf the Nationals lose that final game to the Braves on Thursday, I think their season is over. They are going to have a tough time getting anything at Wrigley Field, so I am taking the Cubs to win 2 of 3 over the weekend.
