With only 2 weeks in the books on the 2018 MLB season, it’s altogether much too early to look at the current standings as a sign of how things will end up once the entire regular season has been played. There are a couple of surprise leaders in the division races, and we are also seeing of the World Series favorites struggling in the early going. These things all tend to have a way of sorting themselves out, with the cream usually rising to the top over time. For now, we are going to focus on what we think is the best MLB series of the week based on how things have gone in an opening couple of weeks.

The Colorado Rockies, a playoff team last season, appear to be ready to break out of their early season swoon. They closed out last week by taking 3 of 4 from the Washington Nationals, a run that took them a game over .500 on the season. Their week gets off to a tough start with a trip to Pittsburgh to face the surprising 11-4 Pirates. The Rockies have been a much better road team than they were at home in the early going, so I would not be surprised to see them take this series, even though the Pirates are 7-3 in their last 10 games.

One of the most surprising starts to the season has been the one delivered by the 12-2 Mets. They have been getting some stellar pitching and are 1st in the league in team ERA. The great performances from their pitching staff have helped them win 11 of their last 12 games. This will be the second meeting of the season between these two teams, and it was the Mets who came away with the 3-game sweep the last time out. Not so sure they will sweep again here, but I do think they will win the series.

Boston Red Sox Vs LA Angels – Tuesday to Thursday

We have a pair of somewhat surprising division leaders going head to head in what could potentially be an explosive series in terms of offense. The 13-2 Red Sox have hammered in 89 runs during their opening 15 games, but that still pales in comparison to what the Angels are doing when their players step inside the batting box. LA has the lead in the AL West, compiling a 13-3 record to get things rolling, and batting in 103 runs in those opening 16 games. We could very well see the ball flying all over the place in this series, with the slight edge going to the Angels in their own ballpark.

Pitching Matchup: Jaime Garcia vs Jordan Montgomery
The Line: TBA

When: Sunday, April 22 at 1:05 PM ET
Pitching Matchup: J.A. Happ vs Luis Severino
The Line: TBA

The AL East was supposed to be a 2-horse race between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox this season, and while it may still turn out that way, the Toronto Blue Jays are serving notice early on. The Blue Jays are 9-5 to start the season, going 7-3 in their last 10 games and getting a level of pitching that no-one really saw coming. The Yankees are also 7-3 in their last 10 games, taking their season record to 7-7. They are starting to show some signs of coming together finally, which is why I like the Yankees to take this series.
