Once the second half of the MLB season gets underway, the intensity and pressure tend to get greater with each passing week. The teams who are best able to embrace that are the ones who thrive and head into the playoffs. It’s not every team that is built to withstand that pressure, though, which is why we routinely see teams who were in contention at the All-Star break suddenly fall off rather sharply in the second half of the season. The Seattle Mariners fall into that latter category, as they have seen their strong play in the first half all turn out to be for naught in the final couple of months of the season. There were reports earlier this week of a Mariners clubhouse brawl, which gives you an idea of just how far this team has fallen. You really now have to think that this team might just sink like a stone in the final few weeks of the season, potentially beginning this weekend when they welcome in the playoff-bound New York Yankees for the Wild Card spot.

Wild CardThe Yankees have essentially been in the same position for a few weeks now, which is stuck in second in the AL East with no shot at running down the Boston Red Sox. New York are going to be heading into the AL Wild Card Game when the playoffs commence, with their sole task now being to ensure that they get to play that game at Yankee Stadium. The chances of that happening look pretty good when you consider that the Yankees are 4 ½ games up on the Oakland A’s, the team currently occupying the second spot in the WC. It’s important that the Yankees get that home game, as they are a solid 48-24 in their own ballpark, which includes a 3-game sweep over the Mariners earlier in the year. Still, this team is solid on the road, too, boasting a 39-28 record.

Wild Card

Wild CardThe Mariners showed some real promise earlier in the season, but it always felt that they were gutting out wins as opposed to looking like a real playoff contender. After all, this is a team that is down in 23rd in runs scored, and who are currently 18th in team ERA. Those are not the types of numbers that you expect to see from a team making a run at the playoffs. The postseason now looks like a longshot indeed for this team, as they find themselves 5 ½ games out of the final Wild Card spot. The infighting is a real issue now, with this group slipping to a 4-6 record in their last 10 games. Seattle were thoroughly outclassed and outscored in their earlier meeting with the Yankees this season, losing all 3 games losing by an average of 2.7 RPG.

Wild Card

Wild CardThe Mariners are in total freefall right now and I have a hard time seeing how they are going to generate any wins against this Yankees team. New York already has one sweep of the Mariners this season, and this may well prove to be number two.
