It’s an exciting time to be a baseball fan, as the 2018 MLB season gets started this coming Thursday, March 29, a few days earlier than what we have become accustomed to. Hope spring eternal for every team in the league prior to the first pitch, but as the season progresses, it will quickly become clear who the contenders are, as well as which teams will be sitting in the cellar of their respective divisions. Weird, wonderful things can happen over the course of the regular season, but for now, we have what we believe to be an idea of which teams will be in the World Series picture at the end of the season. Let’s take a closer look at the favorites betting odds before the first pitch gets tossed on the new season.

The Houston Astros are the defending World Series champions, and given how well they played last year, there is no reason to believe that they won’t challenge again this season. They crossed the 100-win mark last year and will be looking for more of the same in 2018. The fact that they are in possession of one of the best pitching staffs in the MLB suggests that they are going to once again a dominant force and likely the team to beat.
New York Yankees
2017 was a bit of a surprise year for the Yankees, thanks in no small part to the performance of rookie sensation Aaron Judge. Having a successful sophomore season can often prove to be a challenge for younger players, but the arrival of Giancarlo Stanton in the Big Apple should help take some of the pressure off Judge’s shoulders. The Yankees look to be back in a big way and are going to be one of the teams that push the Astros hard all season long.
You don’t get any prizes for finishing second in professional sports, which is why the Dodgers will be looking to go one better than they did last season. The Dodgers racked up 104 wins in a very competitive NL West, and then made it all the way to the World Series before losing to the Astros. You have to like the Dodgers to dominate the NL again, although there are sure to be some concerns about the health of ace pitcher Clayton Kershaw’s back.
No team ended the season last year with more of a thud than the Cleveland Indians. They were one of the best teams in the regular season, winning 102 games and running away with the Central Division. Despite all of that, they fell at the first hurdle in the postseason. The Indians are coming into 2018 with a serious chip on their shoulder, with many believing that this group might be better than it was last year. Cleveland is a force to be reckoned with.
The Cubs got a huge monkey off their back when they won the World Series in 2016, but they were a team that looked tired and lethargic for portions of last season. They should have shaken off those World Series hangover cobwebs by now and will be looking to bounce back in a big way this year. Most of the important pieces from that World Series win are still in place, so there is no reason why this team shouldn’t be one of the favorites to come out of the NL.
