The Boston Celtics picked up a convincing 96-83 home win in Game 5 on Wednesday night to take a 3-2 series lead as Jayson Tatum scored a team-high 24 points while adding seven rebounds, four assists, four steals and two blocks.
“I just enjoy playing in the big moments, in the big games,” Tatum said. “I think that’s when I have the most fun when things are on the line. A lot of guys stepped up tonight. I can’t say it enough: We’re one win away from going to the [NBA] Finals, especially after everything we’ve been through.”
Second-year swingman Jaylen Brown added 17 points and veteran all-star center Al Horford chipped in with a nice double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds, but like everyone else, even LeBron James has been impressed with the talented Tatum.
“His composure, he plays above his age. The unfortunate events of injuries [the Celtics] have had has allowed him to get better faster than they expected,” James said. “It’s given him an opportunity to make fail plays or make mistakes and be able to learn from them and still be able to be on the floor.
“His talent, his composure, where he’s come from has allowed him to be successful. He’s a very, very, very good player already and he definitely, at this pace, can become a great player.”
Cleveland got a game-high 26 points from James to go along with 10 rebounds and five assists while Kevin Love added 14 points in the loss. However, no other Cavs player scored more than eight points in their third straight humbling road loss in Boston.
“We’re looking forward to having an opportunity to force a Game 7,” said James. “It’s up to us to see if we can come back here for one more.”
The starting backcourt of George Hill and J.R. Smith combined to shoot a dismal 2 of 11 from the field with nine combined points. Starting center Tristan Thompson had one point in 26 minutes.
“Our focus — LeBron’s focus — is to win,” Cleveland coach Tyronn Lue said. “That’s the only thing that matters.”
I know the Boston Celtics are a nearly perfect 5-1 ATS in their last six games against a team above .600, but the young C’s are also just 1-4 ATS in their last five road games. The Cavaliers are a pristine 4-0 ATS in their last four home games against a team with a road record above .600 and their backs are up against the wall.
I’m certain that LeBron James is going to come out with a fantastic effort to lead Cleveland to the season-saving home win in Game 6. The home team has won each and every game in this series and I predict that it’s going to continue on that way until Boston dispatches them in Game 7. The Cavs win and narrowly cover the spread against a Celtics team that is clearly superior to them.
Pick: Cleveland Cavaliers -7 -110 | -330 | U202 -110
