NFL Preseason Betting Picks – Cash in on Trio of Week 2 Matchups
The Houston Texans and San Francisco 49ers are expected to improve in a big way heading into 2018, mostly because they both have young quarterbacks that have shown extraordinary ability in their handful of respective starts.
The Chicago Bears are looking to a new era under their first-year head coach while the Denver Broncos look to get back to being a playoff caliber team now that they’ve got a ‘real’ quarterback for the first time in years. The Seattle Seahawks are looking to rebound after seeing their five-year run of postseason excellence come to an abrupt halt in 2017 and the Los Angeles Chargers are hoping to challenge for the AFC Championship as they enter the new season with a ton of talent.
With all six teams set to take to the field for their respective Week 2 NFL Preseason matchups, let’s find out which teams are offering the best value in their respective pairings.
“We’re locked in right now and I think we’re in a good place.” 🔒

The 49ers rallied to beat the Dallas Cowboys, 24-21 in their preseason opener. New, $137.5 million franchise quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo went a modest 3 of 6 for on his only drive, but third-string signal-caller Nick Mullens tossed a 7-yard touchdown pass to Richie James Jr. with just 18 seconds remaining to finish off the comeback after running back Jeremy McNichols scored on a 1-yard run with 4:24 remaining to help San Francisco close the gap on what was a 21-10 deficit heading into the fourth quarter. Second string quarterback C.J. Beathard completed 10 of 20 passes for 181 yards with one interception.
“We’re trying to do something different things and see what works and what doesn’t,” Garoppolo said. “We haven’t been in that situation in a year and you try to get things rolling.”
The Texans beat Kansas City 17-10 on the road in their preseason opener last week as backup quarterback Brandon Weeden had a great game by going 9 of 11 for 97 yards and two touchdowns. Third-string signal-caller Joe Webb completed 6 of 13 for 56 yards. Starting quarterback Deshaun Watson played just one series and threw just one pass as the Texans continue to play it safe with their franchise cornerstone following his season-ending ACL tear a year ago. Tight end Jordan Akins had two touchdown catches in the win.
“It was a good time to get the juices flowing a little bit, to hear the fans and just walk on the field,” Watson said.
With Houston having a pair of good backup quarterbacks and playing at home for a head coach that likes to win his fair share of games in the preseason, the Texans are the pick to win and narrowly cover the chalk.
I’m certainly not expecting San Francisco to roll over in this one, not to mention the Niners have a decent situation at backup quarterback as well. I’m going with Houston and I also like the Over as both of these teams top the 20-point plateau.
Pick: Texans 24 49ers 21

The Bears put up a really good effort in Matt Nagy’s debut before coming up just short in their 30-27 Week 1 preseason loss last week. Third-string quarterback Tyler Bray went 18 for 27 for 219 passing yards while Chase Daniel threw for 76 yards and an interception on 8 of 12 passing. No. 2 quarterback Chase Daniel completed 8 of 12 in the loss for 76 yards. Unfortunately, both quarterbacks failed to throw a touchdown pass while both tossed costly interceptions.
The Broncos got smacked around in their 42-28 preseason-opening loss to Minnesota last week. While starter Case Keenum played just one series while going 1 for 4 for 5 yards. Second-year quarterback Chad Kelly put on a nice performance by going 14 for 21 for 177 yards with two touchdowns and one interception while fellow backup Paxton Lynch went just 6 of 11 for 24 yards. The performance earned Kelly the No. 2 job.
I’m going with the over 39.5 points as my top pick for this Week 2 preseason matchup. Chicago may not be the defensive juggernaut they have been in the past as they transition to an offensive coach in former Chiefs coordinator Matt Nagy but I believe they’re going to be far more explosive offensively moving forward, plus they have a couple of good backup quarterbacks that can make plays. The play of Chad Kelly, far more so than Paxton Lynch, make the Broncos offense dangerous as well once this one goes to the No. 2 s. I like Chicago to scratch out the home win after their narrow loss last week and for the over 39.5 totals points.
Pick: Bears 27 Broncos 24
🏈: NFL Preseason – Seattle Seahawks at Los Angeles Chargers

Seattle was on the wrong end of a 19-17 loss to Indianapolis in their preseason opener last week, but they do have a capable backup in veteran Austin Davis – and a head coach that loves winning in the preseason in Pete Carroll. Davis completed 4 of 5 passes but tossed an interception while third-string signal-caller Alex McGough completed 10 of 13 passes for 48 yards. Running back Chris Carson rushed four times for 26 yards for Seattle while tight end Nick Vannett caught two passes for 20 yards and one score. Starting quarterback Russell Wilson played went 4 of 5 for 43 yards, including a 5-yard touchdown pass to Vannett that finished off his only drive.
The Chargers suffered a hard-fought 24-17 preseason-opening loss against Arizona last week as veteran Geno Smith battled it out with Cardale Jones for the No. 2 quarterback job behind Philip Rivers.
Smith went 14 of 23 for 218 yards with one touchdown and one interception while Jones went 6 of 12 for 50 yards. Roster hopeful Nick Shimonek completed 8 of 14 passes for 39 yards. Wide receiver Geremy Davis caught four passes for 88 yards and one score
“At some point, I want to know what we have in Cardale Jones,” coach Anthony Lynn said. “He came into this league and he’s never really been given a legitimate opportunity, in my opinion. I want to give him that opportunity.”
I like the Los Angeles Chargers as a 3-point home favorite in this one. The Bolts have two decent quarterbacks in a street fight for the No. 2 job and that kind of competition should raise both quarterbacks’ levels of play. I like Seattle to go after the win, because, hey, that’s what Pete Carroll does. I also like the over 39.5 total.
Pick: Chargers 24 Seahawks 20
