NFL Preseason Betting Picks: Atlanta Falcons at New York Jets
Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons may have come up short of their Super Bowl hopes in 2017 just one year after reaching Super Bowl 52 in 2016, but they’re entering the 2018 NFL regular season with some legitimate hopes to make it back to the final game of the season. While the same can’t be said for a New York Jets team that is coming off of consecutive 5-11 seasons, there is hope in the Big Apple with New York drafting what they hope will be their franchise signal-caller with the third overall pick in this year’s draft.
If you’re looking for some NFL preseason betting value then look no further. Now, let’s find out where that betting value lies in this preseason opener.

For the Falcons, I’m not expecting to see starting quarterback Matt Ryan for more than a series, if that. However, Atlanta does have an experienced backup in veteran Matt Schaub that won’t hurt the team with his steady play. After Schaub departs, the Falcons will turn to third-year backup Garrett Grayson who is in a battle with former East Carolina signal-caller Kurt Benkert for the third-string job. You should probably know that Falcons head coach Dan Quinn is a modest 5-7 in the preseason and that Atlanta went 0-4 during the scrimmage season a year ago.
For the Jets, they’ll play starter Josh McCown a series or two-game before turning to veteran Teddy Bridgewater and eventually, No. 3 overall draft pick and the man they hope will be the foundation of their franchise for years to come in strong-armed former USC star Sam Darnold. All three quarterbacks have their own reasons to play at a high level with McCown looking to remain the starter, Bridgewater looking to unseat him and get his career back on track following a nearly two-year hiatus and Darnold hoping to see the field much sooner rather than later.
If this were a regular season game, Atlanta would be road favorites to beat the Jets and they’d almost certainly get the SU to win at the very least. However, since this isn’t a regular season matchup and the New York Jets have a much better situation with their backup quarterbacks, I believe the J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets, are the easy pick to win and cover the chalk as a slight 2.5-point home favorite.
New York’s younger players will be looking to make an impression on head coach Todd Bowles and either secure spots on the team or starting jobs at several positions where the Falcons are far more set with their starters and goals as they head into 2018 looking to challenge for the conference championship at the very least. Keep it simple and back the New York Jets to win outright and cover the spread.
Pick: NY Jets 24 Falcons 17
