NFL Preseason Betting Picks: Cleveland Browns Vs New York Giants
The Cleveland Browns may have gone 0-16 a year ago, but things are actually looking up for the floundering franchise as they get set to make their 2018 preseason debut on Thursday night. Cleveland ended up with two of the top four picks in the NFL Draft and made a series of wise offseason moves that have given them a completely new look heading into the upcoming campaign.
The New York Giants had a pitiful 2017 season that saw them go 3-13 last season, but there’s good news for the G-Men as well. The Giants’ failures last season prompted them to make some sweeping changes including bringing in a new head coach in former Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur as well as helping them land the second overall pick in the NFL Draft which they used to nab gifted running back Saquon Barkley out of Penn State.
Now, with the two franchises looking to improve in a big way in 2018, let’s find out where the best betting value lies heading into their NFL Preseason opener.

Veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor may see a series of action and two and most, but after he leaves, the Browns have a pair of backups they are comfortable with, including first overall draft pick Baker Mayfield and veteran backup Drew Stanton. Cleveland is 4-8 in the preseason under head coach Hue Jackson and will be looking to improve on both sides of the ball after finishing dead last in scoring (14.6 ppg) and 31st in points allowed (25.6 ppg).
Future Hall of Fame quarterback Eli Manning may or may not see any action in this one, but they’ll turn to backup Davis Webb, fourth-round draft pick Kyle Lauletta and fellow-third string hopeful Alex Tanney. Webb completed 18 of 34 passes for 190 yards during the preseason a year ago but didn’t take any snaps in the regular season. Lauletta was drafted in the fourth round this year by the new combination of GM Dave Gettleman and head coach Pat Shurmur. Tanney has one game of NFL experience with Tennessee way back in 2015. The Giants ranked 31st in scoring (15.4 ppg) and 27th in points allowed (24.2 ppg) in 2017.
Preseason games generally come down to which team has the better set of backups and for me, the Cleveland Browns have the far better situation at backup quarterback in this contest. I’m expecting Baker Mayfield and mostly, Drew Stanton, to outplay Davis Webb, Lauletta and Tanney en route to leading the Browns to the feel-good win.
