NFL Preseason Betting Picks: Detroit Lions at Oakland Raiders
Whether you liked the decision or not, the Detroit Lions decided to part ways with former head coach Jim Caldwell and hire former
New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia despite going 9-7 in each of the two previous seasons under Caldwell while making one playoff appearance.
The Oakland Raiders also decided to part ways with their former head coach – and they paid a pretty penny to hire former head coach Jon Gruden out of the comfortable retirement that is the life of a television analyst. Oakland signed Gruden to a 10-year, $100 million dollar deal to lead the franchise back to its once perennial glory days.
Now, with both coaches looking to get their respective new era’s off to a positive start, let’s find out which team is offering the best betting value in their Week 1 NFL preseason matchup.

Starting quarterback Matthew Stafford won’t play more than a series or two if that, but Detroit has a capable backup in veteran signal-caller Matt Cassel and a hungry third-stringer in second-year quarterback Jake Rudock. Patricia takes over after working as the New England Patriots defensive coordinator for the past six seasons.
Last season, Cassel saw action in two games as the backup to Marcus Mariota in Tennessee. He completed 25 of 42 passes (59.5%) for a modest 162 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Rudock saw some action in three games with the Lions last season while completing 3 of 5 passes for 24 yards with one interception. Right now, he’d like nothing better than to get back to No. 2 on the depth chart.
The Oakland Raiders have a gifted franchise quarterback in starter Derek Carr, even though he regressed last season from his outstanding 2016 season. After Carr leaves, the Raiders will turn to a veteran, E.J. Manuel. The former first-round pick of the Buffalo Bills played in two games last season while starting one for an injured Carr. Manuel completed 24 of 43 passes (55.8%) for 265 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Third-string signal-caller Connor Cook never saw the field last season after seeing action in one game for Oakland in 2016 in which he completed 14 of 21 passes (66.7%) for 150 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
For this contest, I’m going to urge you to back the Oakland Raiders for a couple of rock-solid reasons. First, Jon Gruden takes his preseason games pretty seriously as evidenced by the fact that he’s a stellar 30-16 in the preseason in his career. Second and more important, Oakland simply has the better set of backup quarterbacks. Detroit’s Matt Cassel is aging quickly and clearly, isn’t the same player he once was and Jake Rudock just can’t be very good if he can’t unseat him. I’m expecting E.J. Manuel and Connor Cook to outplay their Detroit counterparts to lead the Raiders to the big home win and ATS cover.
Pick: Raiders 24 Lions 17
