The Steelers looked fantastic in their 31-14 beat-down of Philadelphia in their preseason opener on Thursday as all three of their backup quarterbacks played very well. Second-year signal-caller Joshua Dobbs completed 9 of 13 passes for 91 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Rookie Mason Rudolph went 7-for-12 for 101 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions and veteran Landry Jones went 4-for-4 for 83 yards with one TD strike. Running back Fitzgerald Toussaint led the Steelers with 29 rushing yards and one touchdown on seven carries and second-year phenom wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster and Damoun Patterson combined for 148 receiving yards and two touchdowns on seven receptions.
The Packers also got some excellent play from their backup quarterbacks in their 31-17 preseason-opening win over the Tennessee Titans last week. No. 2 signal-caller Brett Hundley completed 9 of 14 passes for 108 yards with one touchdown and one interception while Tim Boyle went 7-for-15 for 130 yards with two touchdowns and no picks and DeShone Kizer completed 9 of 18 passes for 134 yards.
Running back Joel Bouagnon led the Packers with 25 rushing yards and one touchdown on 11 carries while wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling has five catches for 101 yards and one score.
The Steelers have won three straight road preseason games and four of their last five overall while covering the spread in each victory. Green Bay has won six straight preseason games at home while covering the chalk each time. The Packers are 8-1 SU and ATS in their last nine home preseason games.
Despite the Packers’ preseason excellence at home, I’m going with Pittsburgh to get the road upset in this one, simply because they have the better set of backup quarterbacks. I’m not real fond of Brett Hundley and I think Pittsburgh’s Josh Dobbs and Mason Rudolph have the look of potential future starters.
Pick: Pittsburgh 27 Green Bay 23

The Jets looked mostly phenomenal in their 17-0 shutout win over Atlanta in their preseason opener on Friday. While veteran Josh McCown was solid, it was the play of New York backup Teddy Bridgewater and first-round draft pick Sam Darnold that really opened eyes. Bridgewater was razor-sharp in completing 7 of 8 passes for 85 yards and one touchdown and Darnold, the No. 3 overall pick in the draft, was also outstanding in completing 13 of 18 passes for 96 yards and one score. Wide receivers Charles Johnson and Isaiah Crowell added touchdown catches in the win.
Washington jumped out to a 10-0 first-quarter lead over New England in their preseason opener but got shut out in the second half en route to a 26-17 road loss in their scrimmage opener on Thursday. While starting quarterback Alex Smith sat out, backup Colt McCoy was fantastic in completing 13 of 18 passes for 189 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions while third-stringer Kevin Hogan also looked good in completing 7 of 9 passes for 44 yards. The bad news for the Skins coming out of this contest is the loss of running back Derrius Guice who was lost for the season to a torn ACL.
I like Colt McCoy as a veteran backup that won’t get rattled and I think it’s possible that Kevin Hogan could find a way to stick in the league as well. However, I don’t like either as much as I like Teddy Bridgewater and Sam Darnold. Not only that, but New York’s quarterback, Josh McCown included, all have a lot to play for as each has a realistic shot at being the starter once the regular season gets underway. The suddenly revitalized New York Jets are the pick to win and cash in!
