NFL Week 2: Detroit Lions at San Francisco 49ers, Betting Odds
While the Niners put up a good effort against a legitimate Super Bowl favorite in Week 1, Detroit got completely embarrassed in their own, nationally-televised opener. Now, let’s find out which one of these teams is offering the best betting value in their Week 2 matchup.
Puttin in work for the weekend.

The Lions got completely and utterly spanked in their stunning 48-17 season-opening blowout loss against the revitalized New York Jets on Monday night. Veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford went 27 of 46 for 286 yards with one touchdown and four costly interceptions. Detroit got held to a pitiful 39 rushing yards while allowing jets rookie quarterback Sam Darnold to toss two TD passes while also giving up two rushing scores to New York’s Isaiah Crowell.
“Story of the game’s turnovers, you know?” Stafford said afterward. “We had too many of them, I had too many of them.”
Detroit looked like a complete mess in head coach Matt Patricia’s NFL debut.
“We’ve got to coach this a lot better than what we did,” he said. “We’ve got to go out and execute a lot better on the field. It’s a team game, and it starts with me.”
San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers put up a good effort against Minnesota in their 24-16 Week 1 road loss, but they fell short against a superior team with the league’s best defense. Minnesota forced quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo into three interceptions while limiting the Niners to just 90 rushing yards. San Francisco committed four turnovers in all and never really had a chance to beat their NFC counterparts.
“We knew it was going to be a tough challenge with the environment, going against a tough team,” Garoppolo said. “They stood up to everything we thought they would, but with all the things that went bad, we still had a shot at the end there. Just a tough way to end it.”
Expert Pick and Prediction
Let me get started by saying that I genuinely believe the Lions made a big mistake by parting ways with former head coach Jim Caldwell in favor of the inexperienced Matt Patricia.
While San Francisco had a very difficult opener on their hands against the Vikings, I’m fully expecting Jimmy Garoppolo and the Niners offense to rebound in a big way against a Detroit Lions defense that looked completely clueless in their opener against the Jets.
San Francisco is 4-1 ATS in their last five games following an SU loss while Detroit has gone 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 meetings against the Niners and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games in the month of September. The favorite and the home team in this series has gone an identical 3-1-1 ATS in the last five meetings, making I Jimmy G and the 49ers the easy to win and cash in.
Predicted Score: 49ers 31 Lions 21
