Tampa Bay jumped all over Washington in Game 3 by scoring the game’s first three goals en route to a commanding 4-2 win on Tuesday night. Steven Stamkos scored on the power play in the first with Nikita Kucherov lighting the lamp to open the scoring in the second period.
“When you’re in a situation like we were, we needed to do it tonight. And we did,” said Stamkos. “It’s a step in the right direction. But we can’t do it for one night and be satisfied.”
Victor Hedman put Tampa Bay up 3-0 with another goal in the second period after assisting on the Lightning’s first two goals.
“Those guys have delivered when we’ve needed them,” said Lightning coach Jon Cooper.
Brett Connolly got the Caps on the board at 10:31 of the second period but then, Brayden Point gave the Bolts a 4-1 edge with his score at 16:03 of the second period. Washington’s Evgeny Kuznetsov lit the lamp at the 16:58 mark of the third to close out the scoring.
Washington saw Braden Holtby allow four goals on 23 shots to fall 10-3-1 in the playoffs while Tampa Bay goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy improved to 9-4-0 by stopping a whopping 36 shots.
“They came in here, they’re desperate and they played that way,” said Capitals coach Barry Trotz.
I picked the Caps to win Game 3 and even though they fell short, I’m encouraged they’ll bounce back in game 4 to get the win and take a commanding 3-1 series lead. First and foremost, Washington outshot Tampa Bay 38-27 in Game 3 so they clearly had their chances.
The Lightning is 4-0 in their last four road games and 5-2 in their last seven games against their Eastern Conference opponents, but the Caps are an incendiary 22-8 in their last 30 games overall and mind-boggling 93-40 in their last 133 home games. Washington wins to take a 3-1 series lead!
Pick: Washington 4 Tampa Bay 3
