2018 FIFA World Cup: Betting Odds to Win Group D
Every World Cup has what is referred to as a group of death. What that means is that there are four teams in a single group who have a legitimate shot at landing in the top two spots. Group D is the one group that stands out at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, as it looks like the one that is going to be the toughest to get out of. Two-time world champions Argentina are the favorites, as they should be, but the other 3 teams can all make a case for being the team that finishes second. Let’s take a closer look at Group D.

Argentina is desperate to get Lionel Messi a World Cup winners medal, and they came pretty close in 2014, losing to Germany in the final. This may well be the last World Cup where we get to see Messi at his very best, so there is a bit of pressure on Argentina to get the job done, as there is a sense that their window of opportunity may be closing. The Argentinians did not have a smooth qualification process and struggled in the games where Messi was not available. They have a lot of skilled players in this squad, but they all seem to have a habit of deferring to their star player. That needs to stop if they want to win.
Croatia is a lot like Argentina in that they always have high expectations placed on them but somehow manage to fall short. A big part of the issue with this team is that there always seems to be some sort of turmoil surrounding them, with the players, fans, and soccer federation always seemingly at odds with one another. It’s a level of disruption that seems to make it’s way to the field. You get the sense that Croatia needs to get this tournament off to a winning start to avoid the finger pointing and blame game kicking off early on.
Nigeria made it to the World Cup a lot more easily than people expected, tearing through their qualifying group without really breaking a sweat. They have put together a team that has a solid core of veterans, but which also has some younger players that have stepped up and gelled with the rest quite quickly. Nigeria has the potential to spring an upset here, but their main area of concerns in between the sticks, as they do not really have a true world class goalkeeper. That may come back to haunt them.
Iceland is the rank outsiders in this group, which I suppose is fair given the talent that exists here. I think they are the real danger in here, though, as there is no team in the world that works harder than this team does. They do not appear to get down when things are going wrong, and always seem to dig a way out of any hole. The core group that performed so well at the 2016 European Championships is still in place, and they and their fans are going to win a lot of new fans once the action begins in Russia. This is a team that I would not count out, especially when they get fired up by that awesome volcano chant from their fans.
