2018 FIFA World Cup: Expert Pick to Win Group D
There are a couple of different ways you can go when wagering on the 2018 FIFA World Cup. You can go in right now and get some money on the team that you think will win it all. Given that the odds are going to start dropping for the teams that perform well, that may be a wise way to go. Alternatively, you can bet on all the individual games, as well as on the group winners, which is the route that I will be going. I have been putting together previews and predictions for all 8 groups, all of which will be out before opening day on June 14. Today, we are going to turn our attention to Group D, which looks as though itโs going to be one of the toughest to handicap. Only 2 teams will move on to the next round, but there is a case to be made for all 4 teams here. Argentina is in as the favorites for this one, and while they should finish top, the race for second is going to be incredibly tight. Letโs get right to those predictions.

Predicted Group D Winners โ Argentina
Argentina came as close as you can get to winning it all without doing so 4 years ago when they lost in the final to Germany. The main advantage that this team has is that they have the best player in the world pulling on the jersey for yet another World Cup run. This team will go as far as Lionel Messi can carry them, but if Argentina is to become world champions, the supporting cast is going to need to play their part. Far too often in qualifying, Argentina underperformed badly when Messi was out with an injury. Someone needs to step up and take control in those instances when Messi is marked out of the game. Sergio Aguero has the opportunity, and certainly the talent, to be that guy, so look for him to take some of the scoring weight off of Messi.
Who Gets the Other Qualifying Spot in Group D โ Iceland
Iceland is currently seen as the least likely to progress out of this group, but I am going with the longshot here. The core group of players that enchanted us all in their glorious run at the 2016 European Championships is still in place. Their performance there, as well as the experience they gained from that run, may serve them very well in Russia. This is a group that never seems to get too up or down, and they will work their butts off for the full 90 minutes. Iceland finds a way to win, seemingly against all odds, and I think they can sneak into the second spot in this group.
Who Misses Out in Group D โ Croatia and Nigeria
Croatia is a pretty clear second favorite in this group, and while they are an incredibly talented bunch, they also seem to be surrounded by some sort of drama. The antics that take place off the field always seem to spill over on it, and that is going to hurt Croatia. If they do not win their opening game in the group, the falling apart could happen quickly.
Nigeria has a nice little mixture of youth and experience in their squad, but they are glaringly poor at the goalkeeper position. This group is going to be tight, but I see Nigeria finishing bottom.
