It very often takes the FIFA World Cup a little while to get going in terms of excitement, mostly because the opening games in each of the groups tend to be cagey affairs where neither team wants to lose. Playing the group stage is almost like playing a chess match, as there are so many different possible permutations based on the results in each of the 6 games. Teams sometimes try to avoid losing as opposed to going out and getting the win in the opener, as the belief is that 1 point is better than none. If we are being honest, this is not a thought that should even enter the heads of the French squad heading into their opener against Australia on Saturday. France are the absolute class team in Group C, and you have to think that they will be looking to go out and assert that dominance against a far inferior team. France have made a habit of not being at their best against weaker foes, though, so perhaps we should be a little wary here.

Why bet on France
As we just mentioned, the French are an enigmatic group of players who often seem to play when they feel like it. How else do you explain away their dropping points to the likes of Luxembourg and Belarus in the qualifying stage? Make no mistake about it, though, when this team is on, they are a lot of fun to watch. Griezmann, Mbappe, Giroud, and Pogba are all players that can find the back of the net, so it’s no real surprise that the French had gone on a 7-game run of scoring at least 2 goals per game before they tied 1-1 with the US in their final World Cup warm-up game. This is an attacking team that should be able to bang a few in against the Aussies, but don’t be surprised if they give one up, as they have surrendered goals in 5 of their last 6 games.

Why bet on Australia
Australia have played France 3 times in the past, losing 2 and drawing 1. It is the last meeting between the two that probably gives the Aussies most cause for concern, though, as that 2013 meeting ended with France winning 6-0 on the back of an Olivier Giroud hat-trick. Australia are probably well aware that they don’t have much of a shot in this group, but they certainly do not want to be embarrassed over the course of their 3 games. While the Aussies generally adopt an attacking formation, you need to feel that they will have more of a defensive type of line-up for this one, as this game will be all about keeping things respectable for them. They need to try and frustrate the French at every turn, as that could cause their opponents to get a little sloppy.
Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction
It may take a minute for the French to break down the Aussie defense, but once they do, the floodgates could well and truly open up. I like France to win in a bit of a stroll here.
Predicted Score: France 4 Australia 1
