This week saw the start of the UEFA Nation’s League, the latest international soccer competition, but now all the players are back with their club teams and ready to get domestic action restarted. We are just 3 weeks into the La Liga season in Spain, but the top of the table already looks familiar, with Barcelona and Real Madrid both picking up maximum points. We have a full slate of games set to go this weekend, but we are going to focus on the current top 4 teams, with predictions included for each of those games, so let’s get right to it.
Real Sociedad Vs Barcelona – Saturday
The defending champions go on the road for a tricky game against a Real Sociedad team that finished in 6th place in La Liga last season. The home team have started the season by going 1-1-1 to take 4 points from a possible 9. While that may not seem like such a great start, it is worth remembering that they started the season with 3 games on the road. Barcelona have started as expected, taking maximum points and outscoring their opponents 12-2 in their opening 3 games. They have only played 1 road game this season, winning a squeaker 1-0. This one may be a little tighter than expected, but I am on Barcelona to win.
Predicted Score:Real Sociedad 1 Barcelona 2
Athletic Bilbao Vs Real Madrid – Saturday
Life without Cristiano Ronaldo on the field and Zinedine Zidane on the sideline has started well for Real Madrid, as they are 3 for 3 to start the year, outscoring their opponents 10-2 in the process. While Madrid have started well this season, the outcome of this one is not expected to be a formality, as Bilbao are off to a solid start and are currently occupying the 6th spot. Madrid have gone on the road once this season, winning that game 5-1, but I don’t foresee a victory that big this weekend.
Predicted Score: Real Athletic Bilbao 1 Real Madrid 2
Girona Vs Celta Vigo – Sunday
Celta Vigo are sitting in third in the early going, taking 7 points out of a possible 9 from their opening 3 games of the season. They head out on the road this Sunday to face a Girona side that has managed just 4 points out of a possible 9. Goals have been hard to come by for Girona, who have scored just twice in those opening 3 games. Celta Vigo won their lone away game this season by a score of 2-1, but since both of these teams are rather defensive in nature, I would not be surprised to see this one played out to a stalemate.
Predicted Score: Girona 1 Celta Vigo 1
Espanyol Vs Levante – Sunday
This is one of the better match-ups on the La Liga schedule this week, with 4th place Levante going against 6th (tied) place Espanyol. Levante are on the road for this one and will be hoping for a repeat of their opening road game of the season, which they won 3-0. That might not be so easy against a stingy Espanyol defense that won their home opener 2-0. This is a game that I believe is going to be tight, with very few clear-cut chances created in the 9- minutes. One goal might win this one, and I am giving the nod to Espanyol.
Predicted Score: Espanyol 1 Levante 0
