27-year-old Robert Whittaker is 20-4 and comes into this fight off his unanimous decision win over Romero at UFC 213 in July that gave him the interim Middleweight Championship. The win was Whittaker’s eighth straight victory and it came on the heels of consecutive TKO and Performance of the Night finishes for the now, new Middleweight champ.
Whittaker averages 4.77 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy rate of 41 percent. Whittaker’s last loss came in 2014 against Stephen Thompson. The champ has recorded nine of his career wins via KO, five via submission and five more by way of decision. He’s also suffered one career KO loss, one defeat by submission and two losses via decision.
41-year-old Cuban Yoel Romero is 13-2 in his career and comes into this fight off an emphatic third round KO (punches) win over Luke Rockhold at UFC 221 in February. Prior to that, he lost to Whittaker, but prior to that finish, he won eight straight fights with six of those victories coming by way of KO and four of those wins being Performance of the Night outings.
Romero averages 3.06 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy mark of 52.1 percent. The challenger has recorded an impressive 11 of his career wins via KO with two coming by way of decision. Romero has been on the wrong end of one KO loss and his decision loss to Whittaker.
When these two met the first time, I picked Yoel Romero to get the win and I’m coming back with that pick for this rematch pairing despite the fact that Robert Whittaker was awarded what many thoughts was a surprising victory. Romero had four emphatic takedowns in their first meeting and landed more strikes than his opponent which is why many thought he won their initial meetings.
This time around, I don’t think Romero is going to leave the outcome to a decision by the judges. Whittaker hasn’t fought in nearly a year and Romero is more ring ready if you ask me. Yoel Romero is the stronger fighter and this time around, I expect him to use his superior wrestling skills to get Robert Whittaker on the ground where he’ll finish off the champ with a series of well-placed strikes to finish it in the third round!
Pick: Yoel Romero Via Third Round KO
